Attempts to launch and sustain on-line learning communities for teacher education have received considerable attention from administrations and the press. Frequently, on-line learning successes simply do not deliver what they promise. We can, with reasonable assurance, identify and nurture those factors that increase the likelihood of sustainable on-line learning community success. These factors fall into three general categories. First, the selection of an ease of learning and ease of use application (e.g., WebBoard) permits an adequate default setting to begin operation yet permits users and managers to customize their on-line environment. Second, creation and support of users, managers, and administrators by providing training and supporting excellent experiences that evolve into an on-line learning culture. Finally, both users and managers must believe that content and the effort required to learn and access on-line knowledge are an added value.

Many universities use campus-wide software such as WebCT® or Black Board® as their solution for web-based content. Both of these applications are excellent. Neither, however, reflect what educators are likely to find upon leaving the University for K-12 schools. At Wright State University we use WebCT as our approved web-based support application. We are fortunate that WebBoard® is WebCT friendly and that WebBoard enhances WebCT’s functionality. We can and do imbed WebBoard functionality inside WebCT.
